Hostile Takeover?

We have a ginormous plant that has taken up residence between the beans, corn and peas. When this beauty first started to grow, I decided to leave it; figuring there was room enough for all. Never did I think it would not only outgrow it's little patch of garden but I suspect it will scale the fence.

I am very excited about our summer guest. It is some kind of squash or pumpkin and only time will tell when it fruits.

We routinely compost our old pumpkins, gourds, etc in the garden at the end of the fall. I always love it when I see something growing that I didn't plant. It is a bit of mystery and always fun. Some of my best tomatoes last year came from seeds that planted themselves!

Composting is big at our house, so I suspect our summer guest is part of our garbage gardening program. And we too have tomatoes that come up from seed either from last year's dropped fruit or compost. Some years I don't know why I buy plants -- only that it is a ritual.
